Copper, Rust, Clay
Following the Alhambra series where I used clay dug from a river bed in Spain as a drawing material, I began experimenting with other materials, including those I made from copper, chalk and rust. These minerals, in addition to their colour, convey time and process: the formation of rust from metals, the oxidization of copper to make blue. Clay is made of fine particles pulverized over time from minerals, plant life, and animals; chalk forms from calcite shells. With the drawings I’m interested in conveying the sense of embedded time and process in the materials. The drawings often refer to ordering systems derived from mapping and architecture.
